Former United States president Bill Clinton will give a public talk at the Christchurch Town Hall on May 28.

Mr Clinton has been lured to Christchurch by the Variety Club and he will speak to 2500 people who will pay about $180 a ticket.

Variety Club South Island chairman Tim Stonhill said today he heard Mr Clinton would be available in late May and made the
approach to invite him south.

"We understood he was briefly in Auckland and we were able to extend his visit to Christchurch.

"I rate Bill Clinton as one of the top three desirable public speakers in the world after Nelson Mandela and current US president
George W. Bush."

Mr Stonhill told NZPA Mr Clinton would host a cocktail party before delivering a public address at the Town Hall.
He will spend the night in Christchurch and organizers hope to take him on a round of golf or out fishing before he flies home.

The former US president was last in the South Island in September 1999 during the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec)
forum.

He made a private visit to the exclusive Millbrook Resort near Queenstown with his daughter Chelsea and mother-in-law,
Dorothy Rodham.

Mr Clinton had a meal at Queenstown's Boardwalk restaurant with leading New Zealand actors Lucy Lawless and Temuera
Morrison.
