I just read a wonderful series which the author, Darkangel, calls "The Pay for Play Chronicles," that I feel deserves attention. I
personally don't consider them conqueror stories, although they are pretty intense so do be sure to read the disclaimers before
venturing into these tales. Never before have I come across a writer who is able to delve into the psyche of Xena and the bloodlust
that she battles. As I was reading the tales, I could visually see the various themes unfolding and felt the angst which the writer was
imparting. Even after reading the entire series I can't help but find my mind continually returning to the tales because Darkangel has
so cleverly written each story as to make them not only an entertaining read, but thought provoking on so many levels.

R.D. Elliot manages to capture the characterization of Xena and Gabrielle while also weaving an intriguing tale. In The Pledge, our
warrior is forced to answer for some of the things she said to Gabrielle, and in doing so, must find a way to keep her bard. The
Pledge is an entertaining, quick read that I found myself reading over and over again simply because I wanted to relive the dynamics
of Xena and Gabrielle.
