Title: Jaguar Woman Weeps
Medium: Sculpty clay, acrylic paint

This mask was inspired from the short story which
I wrote for a class project.  The Aztec folk tale is a
creation myth that my grandmother used to tell me
about when I was child. After writing the story, I
knew I was going to make a mask and this is the
end result.

To read:
Jaguar Woman Weeps
For this mask, I experimented with the new red sculpty clay.
Although much softer, and easier to mix, I was dissatisfied
with the clay.  The red clay, unlike the white, has a tendency
to chip after it is burned.  Although the white clay is harder
on the hands, I find it I like it's solid consistency better.
Once the mask is molded into the desired
shape, and fired, it is ready to be sanded
smooth, then painted.
For this mask, I chose to make it in the
image of both a human, and a Jaguar
cat because, according to legend,
Jaguar Woman created the great Aztec
people in her image.
Underneath the eyes, I painted tears with pearl
white acrylic paint.  The open mouth depicts
the great weeping which is described in the
first part of the story.
